Canna-Butter

Canna-Butter

Cannabis-infused butter, or canna-butter, is the foundation for many cannabis edibles. This versatile ingredient can be used in recipes ranging from desserts to savory dishes. Follow this step-by-step guide to make your own potent and flavorful canna-butter.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1–2 cups water (as needed)
  • 1 to 2 grams of decarboxylated cannabis (adjust based on desired potency)
Tip: Use high-quality cannabis for the best results. The amount of cannabis depends on its potency and your personal tolerance, so start small if you're new to edibles.

Preparation Time

  • Decarboxylation time: 35-40 minutes
  • Infusion time: 2-3 hours
  • Total time: Approximately 3.5-4 hours

Instructions

Step 1: Decarboxylate the Cannabis

Decarboxylation is crucial to activate the cannabinoids (like THC and CBD) in the cannabis, ensuring their effects in your butter. Skipping this step will result in inactive butter.

  1. Preheat Your Oven:
    • Set your oven to 240°F (115°C).
  2. Prepare the Cannabis:
    • Grind the cannabis buds into coarse pieces — don’t grind them too fine as it can make straining harder later.
    • Spread the cannabis evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or foil.
  3. Bake the Cannabis:
    • Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 35–40 minutes, stirring gently halfway through to ensure even heating.
    • The cannabis should turn a golden brown hue. Once done, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool.

Step 2: Melt the Butter and Begin Infusion

  1. Combine Butter and Water:
    • Add the butter and 1 cup of water to a saucepan or double boiler.
    • Heat the mixture over low heat until the butter is fully melted. The water helps prevent the butter from burning during the infusion process.
  2. Add Decarboxylated Cannabis:
    • Stir in the cooled, decarboxylated cannabis. Mix it well with the melted butter.

Step 3: Infuse the Butter

  1. Simmer on Low Heat:
    • Keep the mixture on low heat (around 160°F to 200°F or 70°C to 93°C) for 2-3 hours. Stir occasionally to ensure the cannabis doesn’t scorch. Do not allow the mixture to boil, as high heat can degrade THC and other cannabinoids.
  2. Optional Slow Cooker Method:
    • Alternatively, you can use a slow cooker set on low heat. Stir occasionally over the course of 3 hours for an even infusion.
Tip: Using a thermometer can help maintain the ideal temperature range for infusion.

Step 4: Strain the Butter

  1. Set Up Your Strainer:
    • Place a fine mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth over a bowl or container.
  2. Strain the Mixture:
    • Carefully pour the butter through the cheesecloth, allowing it to filter out the plant material. Gently squeeze or press the cheesecloth to extract all the butter.
  3. Discard Leftover Plant Material:
    • The remaining cannabis pulp can be composted or discarded.

Step 5: Cool and Store the Butter

  1. Separate Water and Butter:
    • Transfer the mixture to the fridge and chill it for at least 2 hours. The butter will solidify, and the water will separate to the bottom.
    • Once solid, gently remove the butter from the container and discard any water.
  2. Store Properly:
    • Store the canna-butter in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or freeze it for longer storage.

Tips for Success

  • Adjust Potency: The potency of your butter depends on the amount and strength of the cannabis used. Use a small amount of butter in your dishes initially to gauge the effects.
  • Cooking with Canna-Butter: Avoid high-heat cooking (above 325°F/165°C) to preserve the cannabinoids.
  • Test Dose: When using canna-butter in recipes, calculate your dosage per serving to consume responsibly. Start low and go slow, especially if you’re new to edibles.

That’s it! Your canna-butter is ready to be used in your favorite recipes. Whether it’s baked goods, sauces, or spreads, this infused butter can elevate any dish. Enjoy responsibly!
